ROLE DESCRIPTION

The Scientist, Upstream Process Development is responsible for planning and executing upstream cell culture development, process optimization and technology transfer activities to support biologics and vaccine programs from early development through Phase 1/2 clinical trials.

The role applies strong scientific and hands-on expertise in the design, development, and data analysis across modalities including viral, mRNA, and protein-based vaccines and therapies.

Working in a multidisciplinary environment, you will take ownership of project-level deliverables and collaborate closely with Analytical Development, Technical Services, and external partners to ensure process readiness, regulatory compliance, and timely progression of programs.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Act as technical lead and subject matter expert for the development and optimization of upstream processes.

  1. Design and execute laboratory studies to support early-stage development as well as IND and IMPD submissions for Hilleman’s portfolio of products.
  2. Conduct experiments to establish and optimize upstream processes to produce biologics and biopharmaceuticals such as vaccines, mAb or recombinant proteins.
  3. Analyze data from studies, method development, or technology transfer activities, and author reports for submission to regulatory agencies.
  4. Interface with contract manufacturing and testing organizations (CMOs and CTOs) to achieve projects deliverables within the specified timeline.
  5. Partner in a matrix approach to ensure Process Development activities are fully supported and aligned in a cross-functional manner to advance the programme.
  6. Evaluate and implement new technologies for upstream process development.
  7. To support and participate in daily laboratory operations, maintenance and all other duties as required.

EDUCATION, BEHAVIORAL COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS:

  1. BSc / MSc / PhD in Biochemical Engineering, Biotechnology, Biochemistry or related discipline. Fresh graduates are welcome.
  2. Hands-on experience with vector technologies, mammalian cell cultures, modern microbial, yeast fermentation process techniques and equipment operations as related to biopharmaceutical process development at bench to pilot scale, is essential.
  3. Working knowledge of cGMP practices as applicable to upstream manufacturing processes for microbial and mammalian cell culture derived biopharmaceuticals; Experience in process development and/or technology transfer is advantageous.
  4. Strong problem-solving and risk-based decision-making skills for project advancement.
  5. Excellent skills and the ability to manage concurrent deliverables and work effectively in a challenging, fast-paced environment.
  6. Experience with Statistics and Design of Experiment (DoE) as applied in an industrial biopharmaceutical environment will be desirable.
  7. Highly motivated team player capable of independent work with a strong sense of ownership and adaptability.
  8. Proven ability to manage multiple priorities effectively in a fast-paced, matrixed environment.
  9. Excellent communication skills with the ability to present ideas, information effectively and work collaboratively as a member of a multidisciplinary team.
  10. Comply with laboratory safety practices and standard operating procedures; Schedule flexibility including weekend and occasional off-hours coverage.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Manual dexterity required to operate office equipment (i.e. computers, phones, etc.).
  • Typical laboratory bending, stooping, lifting requirements apply.
  • Lifting and moving supplies and equipment (up to 20kg).
  • Ability to wear PPE

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:

Willingness to travel to various meetings or client sites, including overnight trips. Some international travel may be required. Approximately 5 – 20%
