About the role

Rio Tinto Marine exists to provide safe, efficient, and cost-effective shipping services to the Rio Tinto Group. It has a team comprised of professionals with expertise in safety, vetting, assurance, operations, chartering, engineering, and fleet optimization. It is the central repository of marine supply chain expertise within the Rio Tinto Group, possessing a comprehensive understanding of all aspects of marine transportation, global freight markets, and the international regulatory environment. Rio Tinto Marine is responsible for managing, as a principal, all Rio Tinto Ocean freight and the Groups freight exposure globally.

Rio Tinto Marine operates a fleet of 17 owned vessels and over 230 chartered vessels at any time. Rio Tinto Marine performs vetting of over 2,700 voyages per year, calling Rio Tinto and third-party ports globally to maintain high quality standard of vessels in the portfolio.

We are looking for a Marine Safety Manager to provide professional advice on Marine Safety to support the Rio Tinto Marine Safety & Vetting team. Ensuring expert assurance on vessels controlled and engaged by Rio Tinto Marine, delivering superior outcomes in health, safety, and environment while effectively managing and mitigating risks.

Reporting to the Director Marine Safety and Vetting, the individual will:

  • Support Rio Tinto Marine in their journey to improve safety culture through the implementation of increased HSE standards across the owned and chartered fleet, as well as the broader industry.

  • Develop, maintain, and implement a framework for providing ship assurance.

  • Develop, maintain, and implement HSE content across the Rio Tinto Marine portfolio vessels.

  • Lead the implementation of Rio Tintos Designated Owners and Operators (DOO) Program, including the execution of office audits and desktop reviews of technical ship managers, and continuous engagement with DOO member owners and operators.

  • Effectively deploy Master coaches across targeted vessels within the Rio Tinto Marine portfolio.

  • Supervise and direct the Rio Tinto Principal Master Coaches (PMC) and Shipboard Master Coaches (SMC), including performance management and alignment with contractor expectations.

  • Manage the onboarding of new DOO members and maintain regular engagement with existing members to ensure compliance and alignment with Rio Tinto Marines safety and vetting standards.

  • Devise the development and periodic revision of the strategic plan for the DOO Program, ensuring it evolves with industry best practices and internal safety objectives.

  • Implement initiatives to continuously improve vessel safety performance with a focus on risk management and incident/injury reporting systems, and investigations.

  • Support the Marine Safety & Vetting team with safety data analysis, advice, and support.

  • Liaise with shipowners, managers, the Rio Tinto port assurance team and the Rio Tinto terminals, as well as regulators and industry in regards all aspects of HSE improvement on vessels and fleets.

  • Liaise with the Vetting Manager and vetting service provider to maintain and improve the vetting of ships.

  • Providing support to high-level incident investigation and related critical risk management processes for Operations personnel and Contractors through advising on incident/injury analysis strategy, interaction, mentoring, coaching, and improvement planning.

  • Playing a pivotal role in the maintenance and continuous improvement of risk processes. This includes developing programmes, educating and influencing vessel and shore personnel,l and ensuring a sustainable risk management programme is implemented

About you

To be successfully considered for this role, you will have:

  • Master Mariner certificate of competency (in acc. with STCW regulation II-2) with maritime leadership experience in HSEQ.

  • Sailing experience of a minimum of 5 years as engine/deck officer, ideally on bulk carriers or tankers.

  • Experience in developing and implementing ship management safety systems or equivalent.

  • Experience in shipboard safety incident investigations.

  • Experience in ship vetting and auditing, experience as a SIRE/CDI inspector would be an asset.

  • Demonstrated leadership skills with the ability to align operational and strategic objectives.

  • Strong organizational and planning skills, including the ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks.

  • Proven ability to lead contractor performance, including coaching and oversight of external maritime professionals.

  • Excellent ability to draft and edit technical texts and present complex issues clearly and accurately.

  • Strong leadership and decision-making skills, and the ability to manage and develop staff and teams, based on the ethics and integrity policy of Rio Tinto.

Headquartered in Singapore and integrated with Rio Tintos assets, hubs, and offices globally, our Commercial group works hand-in-hand with our product groups to ensure both the amount and types of products we produce meet our customers needs, and manage the trade-off between volumes, quality, cost, and capital expenditure.

Bauxite and Alumina (B&A) is accountable for Rio Tintos worldwide activities related to bauxite mining and refining into smelter-grade alumina. The business unit employs approximately 6,000 people (including JVs and contractors) in ten countries and owns and /or operates five bauxite mines and four smelter-grade alumina plants. B&A is a recognized industry leader and has an extensive project pipeline, which includes the expansion of operations in Australia and other potential countries.
