Head of Department (Literature in English)
Job Description The Head/LiEL is responsible for the Leadership of the LiEL Faculty, Development and Management of staff and Management of Work Processes within the Faculty. Reporting to Vice-Principal (Academic) to support the school vision and mission, the Head of Literature in English (LiEL) is responsible for leading, developing and inspiring a team of dedicated and experienced LiEL teachers to create a vibrant teaching and learning environment through the Literature curriculum. Leadership of LiEL Faculty: The Head of LiEL is responsible for integration of schoolwide policies and programmes to build a positive school culture based on the school ethos: a holistic education in and through the arts, a rigorous school based and IB curriculum as well as a culture of experimentation, expression and discovery. The key leadership responsibilities include (but not limited to):
- Alignment of LiEL curriculum from Years 1 to Year 6 based on the schools curriculum (referencing MOE and IB) goals, scope and sequence, assessment modes and learning needs of students from diverse academic abilities.
- Leading and guiding the LiEL Faculty to translate SOTAs strategic goals into student engagement and learning outcomes in the classroom (referencing guidelines and resources from MOE and IB in the areas of curriculum, pedagogy and assessment).
- Implementing the adoption of sound, purposeful and effective formative and summative assessment practices that support the desired learning outcomes.
- Monitoring and analysis of student performance and to diagnose learning needs and plan for intervention based on segmented needs and continuously work with the Faculty to improve the effectiveness of the curriculum programmes.
- Participating and contributing to SOTAs strategic plans and review processes to develop short- and long- term strategies to achieve school goals and outcomes.
- Monitoring progress and achievement of Faculty to ensure curriculum is in alignment with SOTA strategic goals and the learning needs of students.
- Leveraging technology to enhance and advance teaching and learning of the subject disciplines of the Faculty and to plan for the future of teaching and learning.
- Overseeing strategic initiatives based on SOTAs strategic thrusts and to work collaboratively across faculties to achieve the schools vision and mission.
- Establishing clear expectations and monitor progress of faculty members as well as initiate suitable development plans for staff.
- Identifying training and development needs of the faculty and plan for training activities that enhance the capacity of faculty members in curriculum development, pedagogy, arts integration and IB approaches to Teaching and Learning.
- Developing staff according to their capabilities and development and inculcate a teacher-driven professional learning culture.
- Supporting research on pedagogical approaches for student learning and serve as a thought leader in current and new methodologies in LiEL teaching and pedagogies.
- Planning and allocation of budget(s) and resources to various curriculum programmes and to manage and monitor allocated resources to support teaching and learning
- Developing strategic partnerships and platforms to work collaboratively with key internal and/or educational institutions, government organizations and the community
- Coordinate and support the work of school level committees to facilitate student-focused processes and to strengthen students school experience.
- Have an honours degree and/or professional qualification in the chosen discipline
- Have a broad and thorough knowledge of the teaching subject(s) and the relevant pedagogical approaches and assessment practices. Experience in use of technology in the teaching and learning of the teaching subject is an added advantage
- Experience in curricular planning, implementation of curriculum is an added advantage
- Exposure to or knowledge of the International Baccalaureate Diploma programme is an added advantage
- Have at least 6 years of teaching experience at secondary and/or pre-tertiary levels and at least 3 years of experience in leading a team of teachers
- Be self-motivated and innovative with the ability to work in multi-disciplinary and diverse teams
- Have a strong commitment to and passion for the arts and education
